Digging For History – Archaeology workshop

Our Digging for History workshop offers a fascinating and hands-on introduction to the subject of Archaeology for Key Stage 2 Pupils.  The session is held indoors in the Building from Lavant.

The workshop begins with looking at how archaeologists find an interesting site to excavate.  Children will look at maps and aerial photographs and learn about ways of investigating the landscape for clues that can indicate that a place is of archaeological interest.

A wide range of different archaeological finds will be available to look at and handle.  Children are asked to choose one item, draw it, answer questions about it, weigh and measure it.

  • What can we find out about people from the objects they have left behind?

  • How old are the artefacts?

  • What materials are they made out of?

This workshop has been designed to provoke the children’s curiosity about found objects and how those objects can provide us with vital clues about the what life was like 200, 2000 or even 20,000 years ago.  The main focus will be on asking questions and encouraging the children to discover the answers for themselves through observation and investigation.
