VICTORIAN
COOKING – takes place in the house from Walderton
Each session
is designed to help pupils learn about food, its sources and preparation,
also the table manners for each period.
Session
leaders will guide the children through a discussion of the food of each
period, concentrating on the differences between the diet of rich people and
poor people. The children will participate in the preparation of an
authentic dish from the period they are studying, based on an original
recipe using replica equipment and utensils from our extensive
handling collection. Ingredients used in the recipes are as true to the
period as possible, and many come from the Museum gardens. The actual
cooking of each dish over an open fire will be done by Museum staff.
Notes
All cooking
is done over an open fire and is carried out by volunteers or staff only.
Fire safety measures are always available and the children are told before
they enter the building that they are working near real fires and are warned
of the dangers.
The children
remain the responsibility of the teacher or teacher/helper during these
workshops. It is vital that the children behave in a safe and responsible
manner. Please advise us in advance if there are any pupils with food allergies
or dietary requirements.
Please give a copy of this page to each group leader, and
make them aware of the need for observing the safety issues outlined on the
Information for Group Leaders.
