Programme
There
will be four sequential activities:
Fire and Sketching
The Great
Fire of London lasted for 4 days. This workshop explores the reasons why
fire was such a hazard in Stuart times and finishes with an opportunity of
sketching with chalk and charcoal in period buildings. Held
in the beautiful Pendean
Farmhouse.
Museum Risk Assessment
Tudor Textiles
Natural
fibres, wool, linen and silk and their properties . An exploration of the
production including carding, spinning, weaving, the design and making of
period clothes and the opportunity to try on period costumes. Held
in Bayleaf Farmhouse,
Please wait by the fire in Bayleaf Hall until the previous group has left.

Bees and Candles
No
supermarkets meant that Stuart farmsteads had to be self-sufficient.
Beekeeping to produce honey and wax were part of that process and a crucial part of
domestic life. Traditional artefacts and a candle-dipping session over the
fire makes this workshop a valuable learning experience. This will take
place in
Bayleaf Farmhouse.
Museum Risk Assessment
Apothecary
The Great
Plague of London killed some 75,000 people. This workshop explores the
symptoms, prevention and cures of the disease and enables pupils to make
some of the herbal remedies to ward off the infection.
Students will have a chance to make their own
'Pomander Bead'. This will
take place in Pendean farmhouse -
after the activity groups
may look over the house.
